Zbigniew Joseph Orlowski (Joe), 92, of Monroe was captured by advancing German troops in 1939 while defending his homeland, Poland, during WWII.
Mr. Orlowski spent the remainder of the conflict as a prisoner of war in a German officer camp near Murnau, Germany. U.S. soldiers liberated his camp nearly six years later in April of 1945.
Evening News staff met several times with Mr. Orlowski, an officer in the Polish army and German-held POW during World War II, in an effort to record his memories in words, in pictures and in his own voice.
Interviews wrapped up just in time for the May 8, 60th anniversary of VE Day, the last day of war in Europe.
