If you are home alone while your parents are at work or running errands, make sure you stay safe by knowing what to do in certain situations.

The following are some tips if you are home alone:

Do not tell anyone you will be home alone.

If a stranger knocks on the door, don't answer it.

If someone calls and asks to speak to your mom or dad, tell them they "can't come to the phone right now" and take a message.

Lock all doors and windows so no one can get in. Learn how to unlock the door, or windows, in case you need to get out.

Learn you phone number (including your area code); your parents' cell phone numbers and know your address (including ZIP code).



In case
of emergency ...

An emergency is when you need help from a police officer, firefighter or doctor.

If you're home alone, would you know what to do if there's an emergency? If not, follow these steps to make sure you stay safe:

Go to a safe place immediately

Call 911. Tell them what the emergency is, your address and don't hang up until the operator says it's okay

Know your parents' full names, your address and phone number
