Get Movin - 10/15/2003

James Humason flexes his muscles.

Get out there and Exercise

Get movin’ Parents, doctors and teachers seem to say it a lot: "Exercise is important." What exactly makes it so important? Exercise makes you strong, healthy, less stressed and more energetic.

While it may make sense to exercise, it’s not always fun. And for some kids, it’s not always easy. That’s why Brad Booth, an adaptive physical education teacher for the Monroe County Intermediate School District, has a few suggestions. "There’s no limit to what you can do," he said.

Team sports like volleyball are much easier for some and more fun for everyone when played with a balloon instead of a ball. The balloon moves slower, Mr. Booth said, so almost any kid can hit it.. More of a softball fan? Try softball with an oversized ball and bat, he said. If team sports aren’t your thing, try the solitary activities like the sitting sit-up or the on-the-knees push-ups. For some exercises, try an elastic band – available at most athletic stores. The elastic band can help you pump up with some fun. Mr. Booth said you can make the elastic band even easier to use by tying large hair bands to the ends of the band. The hair bands then just slip over your wrists so you don’t even have to hold the elastic band.

But exercise can be even easier than that.
"Go for walks with your parents, walk the dog," Mr. Booth said. Both types of activity are exercise – just like swimming, running and dancing. "Turn off the TV and go for a walk," Mr. Booth said. "It’s a start."

Keep a journal

Ready to start exercising? Keep a record of what you did. For example, if you chose to do sitting sit-ups, you would record

Day
Monday

How long I exercised/How much I did
15 minutes 60 Sitting sit-ups

How I feel
Great!

Notes about my exercise
Next time, I will try them standing up.
