Who's afraid of lice?

How to stop lice from making themselves at home on your head

Lice don't fly, and they don't jump. So how do they get from one person's head to another? By close contact or sharing personal items. Here are some ways to keep your head bug-free.

• Don't share combs, hairbrushes, barrettes, hair ribbons, hats or scarves with anyone. Lice could be hiding on these items.

• If your head feels itchy, tell a parent or teacher. There are shampoos and creams that can get rid of lice.

• Once you get rid of those lice, you don't want to invite them back. So wash anything that came in contact with your head, like hats, pillows, sheets and your favorite stuffed animals.

Remember: Lice like everybody, regardless of whether they are rich or poor, brainy or silly. So don't make fun of someone just because they got sent home for lice. Because it could happen to you!

Did you know?

If you've got only one bug on your head, it's called a LOUSE. If it's a whole family of bugs, they're called lice. Lice is the plural form of the word louse.
